Frequently Asked Questions

Top things you should know about newborns

Newborns are overstimulated easily.

Adjusting to life outside of the womb is hard. Bright lights, strong smells, loud environments/people are overstimulating to your baby.

Baby wearing and holding your baby will make her/him feel more safe and secure. Its ok not to pass around your baby, they just need you to keep them close.

Newborns eat at night!

Babies tummies are small, they can only handle a small amount of food at once. Night time feedings are not only normal, they are necessary. Frequent feedings around the clock keep them in an alert sleep state and not a REM state every 2-3 hours at night. That’s SIDs prevention.

There is so much information out there on getting your baby to sleep through the night. It will come. It is not biologically normal for a baby to sleep through the night till about 6 months. Your newborn will not be on a schedule.

I know how difficult it may be for all of us to have so much variability day to day. The first few months there will not be a true schedule but you CAN work on a flexible routine. Bath time at the same time each day or a walk in the morning to help you get out and baby get some fresh air. These are activities that will make the day's feel scheduled.

Cluster feedings are normal.

Most professionals will tell you babies will nurse every 2-3 hours but they fail to tell you in the first 2-4 weeks of life babies will go through multiple phases of wanting to nurse way more than that. Some times every 45 minutes or every 90 minutes back to back. The majority of cases show this reflexive and the “building phases” of milk production. This cluster feedings will increase your supply.
